Senior Pets
The aging process begins around five to seven years of age in dogs and cats, and three years in ferrets. Different pets show signs of the aging process at different rates, but the best time to recognize signs of aging is before serious disabilities are present.

Arthritis, weight problems, poor skin and haircoat, vision or hearing changes, and dental problems are common, easily observed problems related to aging.

Diseases of the heart, kidneys, and liver occur frequently in the older pet, and are more difficult to detect. The internal organs have been working continuously for many years, and begin to work less efficiently with age.

Many aging problems are easily treated or controlled with medication, diet, and lifestyle changes. New, safer arthritis medications are helping pets live more active, comfortable lives. Special diets can slow the aging process of the organs and help control weight. The earlier we detect problems, the more treatable they are, and we can help your pet live a longer, healthier life.

The senior pet examination consists of a complete physical exam and blood and urine tests for organ function. This allows us to make recommendations to improve your pet’s health. Normal results provide a baseline of values for your pet for future reference, which enables us to detect early trends in organ function. Abnormal results are a signal to begin treatment of the problems.

The senior examination is a painless procedure that will only take a few extra moments.
